Kids like Mehrdod

Ten year old Mehrdod lives in Tajikistan, a country where one in 10 children will die before their fifth birthday. Pneumonia, a complication of measles, is the biggest killer of children under five, accounting for nearly one in five child deaths globally.

But there is a chance to make it right. Thanks to UNICEF support, Mehrdod was one of 3 million children in Tajikistan who was immunised against measles in a national immunisation campaign to prevent childhood deaths. Over 6,000 health workers travelled to some of the most remote mountain passes and valleys in Tajikistan to reach children like Mehrdod. Yet, there are still many more that need to be reached.

Immunisation is vital to protect children from diseases, many of which have been eradicated from the developed world. Vaccination is one of UNICEF’s key focus areas  and in 2010 UNICEF immunised 58 per cent of the world’s children.
